Questions and Answers
Would I be stupid to purchase a 1992-93 Mercedes Benz 190E 2.6? I am 16, and thought it would be a good first car. My mother says I am stupid, because she thinks that it will be unreliable, expensive to insure/ maintain. Is she right? What do you honestly think? It is either that car, or a '99 Jeep Wrangler. Which one is better? And why is she or why isn't she right?

p3200tmz replied: "I would say...... neither is a GREAT first car. The M/B would be OK but 1. get it checked out by a reputable mechanic, BECAUSE they can be expensive to fix, people often cut corners on older M/Bs, and 2. yes some things can be expensive to fix, mostly due to parts. If you get it, do not get it serviced at the dealer... way to expensive, find your local "eagle's nest", an independent garage that specializes in German cars. The JEEP...... NOT recommended as a first car due to the unique handling characteristics that could make them dangerous to inexperienced drivers. Another factor to consider is the the M/B will get better MPG than the Wrangler."

Carman Nguyen replied: "Mother is right, the first car should be cheap, reliable, easy on inexperienced driver.None of which fits a Benz.Take the Jeep,at least people who service the car will not think you have deep pocket.I do not think you are stupid though, just not informed. You are smart to ask question on the net, tell Mom,she should be proud....!"

CheGuevara replied: "The Mercedes Benz 190 (type W201) and E-class (type W124) are reliable as a swiss clockwork, safe and easy to drive and almost built for eternity! With some maintenance these things will easily live up to 300,000 miles or more! I agree with p3200tmz concerning the fuel consumption and handling. The Mercedes despite it's age is still a very safe car!"

Silver replied: "In my opinion I think that Mercedes would be a sensible best buy. Mercs like those were built to last for a very long time. They are durable and will give you better fuel economy especially when compared with the Jeep. In regard to your mum saying you are stupid, you aren't because you chose a good first car. Unreliability is uncommon with these types of cars because they were built in the 92-93 era. It'll probably be more reliable than the Jeep. It's also classed as a sedan so although your insurance may be high, given your age, you will probably pay less than the Jeep, which is classed as a SUV. Maintenance can be expensive because the parts are usually sourced from Germany but a local reseller should have the parts readily available for this model. In terms of which is better, the Merc tops the Jeep in all aspects except off-road capability. If you will be using your car for off-road more than on road, only then would I recommend the Jeep. Honestly I'd go for the Merc because it's easier to handle as well. Especially if you're starting to drive, it's a great car to learn on. However, insist on a full service history and get the car checked out by a qualified mechanic. If he spots any parts in bad condition, you can negotiate with the seller to reduce the selling price or replace it. This will save you major money in the long run and make you aware of any problems the car may have before you purchase it. The check up may be expensive but considering the amount you may possibly save due to it, it far outweighs the check up price. Another plus of the Merc is that if it has good mileage on it, the fuel economy is stable and the engine has been run in well. I'd say your mum isn't right because she isn't giving you an alternative (or you haven't stated one). All in all the Merc would be your best choice especially over the Jeep. Good luck on your purchase and I do hope I have helped you in this regard."

? replied: "That depends on the condition of the car and how much info/intel you have or can get on where to find the scarce parts for replacements when you get failures on parts that are worn out...and believe me, parts will wear out. If you miraculously find a 190E thats in pristine, immaculate condition, that has done maybe 75,000km since it rolled off production line then you are lucky and you should guard the car with your life! Getting a 190E thats not in such rare condition ain't worth the trouble unless maybe you love/worship (obsessively) the 190E as an icon more than yourself and/or your wife or even having sex as a human."

'93 Mercedes-Benz 190E Aircon Compressor Sensor? There is this sensor at my Benz's aircon compressor, and I want to disable it. Is there any way I can do that? Thanks for answering.

Tito K replied: "The sensor you want to disable is a safety sensor which monitors the copressor RPM and in the event of the compressor locking up ,disengages the compressor clutch to prevent damage to the drive belt which would affect steering/charging and engine cooling. I presume your A/C compressor is not turning on.Check the connector[ 3 pin ] to the conpressor.Disconnect the plug and inspect the 3 sockets. One or more could be spread open.Use a metal pick to shrink the socket and check if that solves the problem. If you would still like to disable the sensor you would have to install a on/off toggle switch that feeds power to the compressor"
