How do you test the solenoid in a Ford E450 bus that controls power between the chassis battery & house batt? I have a Ford E450 and I understand there is a solenoid on the firewall that controls voltage between the chassis battery and the coach battery. How do I test it?

Jim W replied: "Energize the solenoid with one of the batteries disconnected and then test for power on the other terminal. There is a small 12 volt light that can be used to test the unit for 12 volt power. I'm not familiar with the wiring for that system, but I would disconnect the house battery side and insulate the wire while I do the work. While I am in there, I would clean and tighten all of the connections on the solenoid and the batteries and also the alternator and the grounds."

code2e replied: "My experience has shown that the solenoid is installed by the coach builder, not from Ford. The location and wiring method will vary from one manufacturer to another. In my last Ford powered Winnebago, the solenoid was in the coach battery compartment, curb side. However, most solenoids can be tested the same way. There should be two larger gauge cables and one or two smaller wires. One large cable leads to the coach battery positive. The other goes to the alternator output or chassis battery positive. This isolates the two batteries when the engine is off. The smaller wire/s are the control circuit. One will light a grounded test light when the ignition is on and/or engine running. The other small wire, if present, will be a ground. Some solenoids self ground thru the mounting bracket, not needing a seperate ground."

can you put a 03 Ford E450 fuel pump in a 05? I am trying to get a replacement fuel pump for my Ford E450 6.8L motorhome year 2005 but all i can find is 02,03, and 06. i was wondering if it has to specifically be 05 or if any fuel pumps from other years are compatible with my 2005 E450

Christian replied: "Ford may have had a change in that year. I would call a dealership and ask them if the parts are compatible. Or a junk yard could help as well, they have the cross references for this. You could also look at O'rielly's or Autozone online and see what you can come up with there."

Charlie replied: "The 2006 is the same pump."

Ford Goddess replied: "According to Ford's Microcat listing, the correct fuel pump for your vehicle is Ford part number 6C2Z-9H407-CA or Motorcraft number PFS-298. This part number is indicated as the correct pump for vehicles from build date 08/02/04 to 08/18/08. Hope this helps."

How can you turn off the seatbelt alarm on a Ford E450.? A seatbelt is an important thing to wear while in a vehicle. But when the vehicle is running and I'm not driving, the seatbelt alarm gets annoying. Just trying to find an answer.

vanlovdav123 replied: "am sorry but there is nothing you can do, unless you take the sensor out? but you dont want to mess around with your car? just put the music louder."

wuilman_moran replied: "its supposed to turn off after a while"

cecelafleur replied: "by putting on your seatbelt...why would you sit in the car and not drive???"

reality check replied: "Depends on the year. The late 90s and early 00, you could simply push the release button for a couple seconds , but the newer ones you actually have to buckle the belt for a couple minutes!"

tahoo replied: "open the fuses box and take off the fuse of the seat belt"

FREAKZILLA replied: "on my ranger there is instructions in the manual to do that , something like put the belt in , then turn the key off , then wait 3 seconds and press the brakes ??? all newer vehicles have some sort of codes to do a lot of stuff ."

99 ford e450 7.3 turbo started cutting out and letting out white smoke power loss and hard starting? done it twice in the last week whille driving loss power starts running real rough and blows out white smoke last time it happened wiggled the ficm wires and it started and ran just fine still is but an sure it might happen again do i need to replace the ficm

LyndseyB replied: "catalytic converter or injectors"

Josh S replied: "The FICM was prone to get water in them, Ford had us to put duct tape over the vent holes to prevent this. I would remove it and shake it and listen for water sloshing in it. If it does then replace it. Also check the oil level, and if you haven't get the recall done on the Camshaft Position Sensor"

SOUTHERN GENTLEMEN replied: "Check your Turbo Tubing / plumbing, it can pop off / have leaks. Air Fuel ratio off then smoke will occur. Do the free and simple stuff first."

Ford 2004 E450 _Motor locked with FUEL? Ford E450, 2004 -6.0L diesel. Motor locked with fuel after replacing all 8 injectors. I removed the glow plugs to get the fuel out, the motor now cranks. Im guessing an injector is stuck open and dumped fuel. Can it be a fuel injector control modual (ficm) or an injector driver modual. If not, any suggestions or ideas?

doug b replied: "when u pulled the glow plugs did u get fuel out every cylinder or just one,if its only one i would look for a bad injector in that hole.was the engine running before the injector change.you dont mention the year but there were problems in certain years with the wiring harness to the injectors"

Ford Girl replied: "WHAT was the reason for replacing all eight injectors? Was it filled with gasoline? When you replaced the injectors, were the black and white o-rings, as well as the copper washer installed PROPERLY? How tight did you tighten the injector hold-down bolts? Did you know that they have to be torqued to 24 ft-lbs? If you tightened it more than that, it will achieve the same effect as not tightening them enough. Did you remove ALL the glow plugs? What happens when you attempt too crank the engine over? How is the condition of the EGR cooler? Are you sure it hasn't hydrolocked with coolant? Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if the engine is still locked, you may end up needing to pull the head(s) to determine the problem. On an E-series 6.0L, this requires either the engine to be removed, or the cab to be lifted off the frame for this procedure. Hope this helps."

harringtons_locksmith replied: "Motor locked with fuel after replacing all 8 injectors? Is this some thing you did yourself to save money? Are you a mechanic? if not take it to one! If there is something you are good at stick too it! and leave the rest to the professionals!"

Replace outer belt on Ford E450? How to replace outer belt on Ford E450? And what size is the belt? its not outer belt, its Serpentine Belt. i need a diagram of the belt also, its a V8 6.0 Turbo deisel we are on our way to florida, and our van broke down, and we are in some kind of shop, and there is no auto zone stores around here. So i need at least the correct belt size

keith900629 replied: "wtf is a outer belt?"

fordpowerstrokev8 replied: "remove belt tensnor"

lar replied: "I've got a ford truck I work on next door. I take a 1/2 inch breaker bar and 15mm socket and twist the tensioner. If you twist it in the correct way the belt will slide right off. diagram is under the hood in plain sight. If you don't see it there, go to the auto zone and find the jacket off one of their books and look at it and memorize it. Take a pencil and paper and copy it."

1999 ford e450 powerstroke diesel is having a hard start, hot or cold.? Have just replaced all the injector o-rings , fuel filter. Problem was there before the o-rings were changed. ( o-rings were changed because oil was going into fuel and truck was smoking ) Also had oil changed 15w-40. Glow plug relay has also been done.

gdwrnch40 replied: "Batteries,the high pressure oil pump,correct anti-foaming oil."

Rick James replied: "You might want to run with a slightly hotter plug, and have the fuel injector checked over(some kind of liquid cleaner)."

rakel-de-freitas@rogers.com replied: "Low ICP (injector control pressure) during cranking. Anything in the high pressure oil system leaking will cause the symptom you describe. High pressure oil pump, ICP sensor, base lube oil pressure starvation, IPR valve stuck or o-ring failure, are components that can cause low ICP pressure. Do you have access to a scan tool? The IDM (injector driver module) will not enable injectors to operate until it "sees" a minimum of 500 PSI ICP pressure during engine cranking? Is the oil level correct (15 liters)?"

hobbabob replied: "pre- supposing that all is well with glow system [all plugs working properly} the number one no start/hard start on a diesel ford seems to be the batteries if voltage drops below a certain point while cranking the cam position sensor drops out. the fix varies from cleaning all battery terminals and body grounds to separately load testing the batteries[most trucks have 2 but the rescue units i service have 3 remotely located with lots of places for problems] the engines will spin over at what sounds like normal speed but nine times out of ten it is a battery related problem the tenth time it is the cam sensor hope i helped the E's arnt much fun to work on but nothing else comes close to super duty ford diesels.."
