need a radio code for my 1999 audi a4? Had a battery replaced on my 1999 audi a4, now the radio is not functioning, says "Safety". Bought this car used, doesn't have a manual. I need a radio code.

Stangman replied: "contact your local dealer. had to do the same thing for my prelude"

a88fl1 replied: "You could go to the dealer, they usually want to charge you. Or some radios have the code on the back if you take it out."

wrench.monkey replied: "The radio needs to be removed to get the serial # off the back of it & the vin is needed. Did a shop put the battery in? If they did have them do it. They should know not to pull a battery with out the code. If you or a friend did it. You may have to pay. If you do get the serial # and vin ask your local reair shop (not the dealer) to call VW. They are much more likley to get the code out of them for free than you are."

trucker replied: "i had the same problem in my 99 a4, you have to goto the dealer and they will charge you to get the radio code, i was charged 25 dollars. you cant take out the radio yourself, because it will stop working if you do it incorrectly with the anti-theft device."

2003 audi a4 keyless entry question? Hi, Yesterday I unplugged the battery cable from my 03 Audi A4 attempting to replace the dying battery. anyway, I didn't have the tool so I re-connect the cable thinking everything would be fine. But to my surprise, the keyless entry feature no longer works on my remote. Can anyone help me resolve this issue? Thanks in advance.

ill_state00 replied: "Easy Fix , You just have to reprogram your keyless entry.......look in the owner's manual, and it'll walk you through the steps on how to reprogram your keyless entry."

Sandi replied: "Answer above is probably what you are looking for...but I am confused as to why your key fob stopped working after just unplugging the battery. I have a 2006 A3 currently, previously had a 2002 A4, and husband has a 2003 A4...neither of these cars have needed the fob reprogrammed after unhooking the battery. Maybe I have been lucky...dunno. But anyways, if your battery is going dead...BE SURE NEVER TO JUMP START YOUR CAR!! Because you have a computerized climate control system...jump starting your car could fry that (this I have done...and you obviously know, Audi's aren't cheap to fix...about $2500 at least for that problem). Good luck fixing the key situation. If you have a spare key, this link shows you how to do... "

2003 Audi A4 Stereo won't turn on? I replaced the battery in my 2003 Audi A4 and now I can not get my radio to turn on. Do I need to do something special to get this thing going again. Thanks

Mike replied: "Yes, you need to get in touch with an audi dealer and give them your vin# so they can give you a special code to get the radio going again. It's from a security feature to prevent theft of the radio."

How do I reprogram the remote on a 2004 Audi A4? The battery died on the remote and after I replaced it, the remote will not work to unlock/lock or open the truck to include the panic button. The key itself is already programmed. It will unlock/lock and start up the car. How do I reprogram just the remote? Again, this is for a 2004 Audi A4 1.8t. THANKS!!!

g-fam replied: "I used the information on this link with one of my fob switchblade keys and it worked like a charm!.. If it does not work, you are going to have your keys completely reprogrammed by the dealership... Good luck!.. *,...,*"

a88fl1 replied: "http://www.audiforum.ca/audi-mailing-list/1972-re-audi-a4-1997-reprogram-single.html This has instructions,a couple peoples experience with reprogramming remotes and some proplems they had. Good luck."

How do I program a remote car door opener for a 1998 Audi A4? I bought it online a few years ago but, I lost the instructions. The battery died once I replaced it, the programming was lost.

Just Me baby replied: "You don't the dealer does it."

feralpaul replied: "Just leave the car unlocked, who would steal an Audi anyway?.......no offence.....i'm just messing with ya. The Audi dealer should help you with that, just have your wallet full."

How do i pop my hood with a DEAD BATTERY in a 2000 vw passat.? I have a 2000 VW Passat and my battery is dead. I cannot Get into the car because the key does not turn in the trunk or door. I just want to get under the hood to replace the battery. Any suggestions other than breaking the window or calling a tow truck? I might get a new Audi A4, any reasons not to?

mcperson2k replied: "That dosn't make sense?"

Jordan C replied: "Try using a metal hanger with a loop you make at the bottom of it to pop the door lock. You may need a small wedge to keep the molding away from the window while you try to hook it."

TechnoStuff replied: "I assume that if the battery were charged that you could use your remote to open the door... Not familiar with the passat but starters are starters. If you can get to the starter solenoid and find the + battery cable, you could hook a battery charger or jumper cable there to charge the battery (the neg connection simply goes to some bare metal on the engine or vehicle frame). Some vehicles have the starter solenoid mounted to the starter and very frequently you can reach the starter from under the car. If the starter solenoid is not mounted to the starter, it will likely be difficult to reach. The other option would be the main output terminal of the alternator which also goes to the battery + terminal. If you could find someone with a similar car or one at a used car lot where the salesman will let you look under the hood, you might be able to follow the battery cable to see where it goes."

vwh8tr replied: "call AAA for a few bucks they can get it open quick with little damage"

Friar Timothy replied: "1. find BIG rock 2. hit window with BIG rock 3. reach in and open door 4. now follow the normal procedures you would normally use ! BTW....I agree your question makes no sense at all ! Ya don't need a good battery to turn a frigging key !"

p3200tmz replied: "!!! ANY reason not to get a new Audi A4? I think being locked out of your current VW due to a dead battery is plenty good reason not to get another VW! (In case you're not sure, Audi and VW is the same company and the cars are exactly the same except the Audis usually have Quattro.) Anyway, you probably need to get a tow to the VW dealer. Tow+what the dealer will charge you, you better "get out you're f'in check book!""

yahoo replied: "Tools you will need: good sized sledge hammer. Directions: take a good swing at the grille. Try to remove it as much as possible. Then, take another at the hood, try to work the hood out of the latch. (this may require multiple hits) If you have to get into the wreck sooner than you'll replace the battery, like if you'll want to blow it up. Use the sledge hammer to remove the window."

Moose replied: "If the key won't turn, are you sure you have the right car? Maybe that is why the remote doesn't work either."

How to change high beam light bulbs of Audi A4 2203? I am not certain whether to unplug the battery,so I did just to be on the safe side, now I have several lights (warnings) coming up: Brake is on and off, ABS is lighting, EPS is on. Should I reset the computer at the dealer or is there a trick to stop those sings, would it be safe to drive the car like that?? I replaced with light type H7

Kevin J replied: "Disconnecting the battery probably caused low voltage faults in the ABS module. If these aren't cleared through driving, then you will need to get them cleared at a dealer or aftermarket Audi/VW repair shop. If you drive with these on, the ABS will not work but you will still have braking functions."

I have a 1999 Audi A4. I recently got it looked at (they fixed? some brake squeeking) and shortly after i had to replace the battery. As soon as i started it back up with the new battery my radio will not start (no lights nothing) and my ABS/brake light is flashing!!! :( ...what should i do. I spent 400 getting it looked at in the first place :(

itsthewill replied: "you should have went right back into the place and told them about it. chaek your owners manual to see if something has to be reset"

Lou replied: "You're going to need to take it back to the dealer and have them give you the security code for your radio (assuming this is the factory radio). They usually just need the VIN number and proof of ownership. Some dealers also charge a small fee. Unless of course you have the owners manual, and it the security code may be listed in there. As for the abs light, could be a ton of things. They may have forgotten to plug the abs sensors back in, so that would be the first thing i'd check. I would take it back to the dealer that fixed the squeaking and tell them its been on since. See if they'll cover it under the previous work. hope that helps."

pete cochino replied: "i had the same type (year and model) car in my shop not long ago for just about the same thing. the customer had tried to get jumpstarted then replaced the battery. some idiot, somewhere along the line, reversed the cables when connecting to the battery and fried the computor. the car wouldn't start. it just cranked and cranked. after replacing the computor, the radio was inoperative. have a pro reprogram that. an abs/brake lamp on usually means the alternator is no good. have it tested too."

How to replace a turbo? Any precautions? Hi so i need to replace my turbo on my 1998 audi A4. So do i need to know anything or is it a straight swap? Do i have to do anything with the battery? or the oil or coolant lines? Do i have to bleed my fluids out? any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

rick29148 replied: "Don't know that engine, but there's usually an oil feed line going into the center of the turbo, and an oil drain line coming out the bottom. Don't kink, twist, or tightly bend either of those two oil lines. Rest is pretty much bolt off/bolt on. Wouldn't hurt to unhook the ground cable of the battery, just in case. And when you're all done & you test fire it, expect some smoke as the new pieces heat-up, both from the tail pipe & from the unit under the hood. Let it idle for a couple of minutes to get the oil flow moving before you rev it."

CaRnI replied: "Are you upgrading or just replacing. If you're replacing it with a new or rebuilt stock turbo you should be able just to switch them out. Make sure you unplug your battery before you remove any bolts. I've broke this rule once and ended up welding my wrench to a nut and the end of my starter. To start you need to pull the fuel pump relay of your car and then start the car till it dies, this will prepare the car for the new turbo. Then you want to drain all the oil and do an oil change. After the oil change you can then unplug the battery. Then unbolt the coolant lines and the oil lines and then unbolt the turbo from the exhaust manifold. More than likely you will have an internal wastegate (wastegate regulates boost) located on the inside (hotside) of the turbo. Your new turbo should have the exact same fittings and wastegate. Just make sure you install all the coolant lines and oil lines and bolt the new turbo back up to the manifold and exhaust. Now you can reconnect your battery and crank the motor 10-15 seconds. This sends oil though the new turbo to help lubricate for the first startup. Just to be safe crank it a bit more then stop and check the oil feed line for the turbo to make sure it has oil. It won’t be pressurized, if you see oil start to leak out you know you have oil flowing and everything is working. Then you can finally reinstall the fuel pump relay and start the car. If it's an aftermarket turbo make sure you get one that has both coolant and oil fittings, some turbos are just oil cooled. Also you want to make sure you have the same bolt pattern as you stock turbo on the hotside. If you don't then you will need to modify your exhaust flange to accept the new turbo exhaust housing. Break in the new turbo with new oil, and baby it for a little bit (1000-1500 miles) then change out the oil and you should be good to go. Usually with oil cooled turbos the oil acts as a main bearing, if you don't have oil flow you will have a bit of shaft play while there is no oil pressure. Most turbos are like this unless they are the dual ball bearing turbos (toughest quickest spooling turbos), these turbos don't have any shaft play while dry. You don't need to do anything with your coolant lines, just make sure the turbo has oil in it and that oil comes in from the top and exits at the bottom. You may need to clock the turbo if the center cartridge isn't lined up the same as your old turbo. You don't need to do anything with the coolant besides connect it to the turbo. The coolant will level itself off once the system cools down. So checklist: Disconnect fuel pump relay Start car and let it die Oil change Disconnect battery Disconnect coolant to and from turbo Disconnect oil to and from turbo Unbolt exhaust from turbo Unbolt turbo from exhaust Bolt on new turbo, Attach coolant and oil lines Attach exhaust Crank car for 5-10 seconds Crank car again for 5 seconds Reconnect fuel pump relay Start car and let it idle for 5 mins then check for leaks Break in new turbo 1000-1500 miles Something to remember: Oil if is the lifeline of your turbo, if you starve it of oil this will happen. Don’t let it happen If you have any questions feel free to contact me via yahoo im."

adiabaticfire replied: "whether you rebuild the turbo or buy a new center, squirt some very good oil into the oil inlet. a plastic bottle and small hose work good. use something like synthetic oil if you have it. be very careful to assemble the cases onto the center straight(if you do that part yourself), don't let the case pinch against the wheels. use penetrating oil when taking the exhaust bolts loose usually and use very high temp anti seize compound(like copper) when installing if you have it. on some models its not always worth removing the turbo from all of the exhaust manifolding but it depends on model( i don't know audi). try to find a manual for better directions on that. its usually a simple procedure provided you can get to the turbo. look at cleaning out any nasty oil from the intercooler/lines if the old one blew oil. check plugs too. be careful with the oil feed/return lines yes, don't ruin the fittings. use only a good tool. when you first start it up let it idle for a few and check for leaks. it will smoke a little of course. once you see no oil/coolent leaks drive it around and once its hot try the turbo out good to make sure it runs well. it may be a little bit louder than before, thats ok often. and yes always take the negative batt cable loose always. when storing your turbo always have the turbine shaft horizontal, never vertical."

my 1999 audi a4 quattro wont start (any advice/answers )? the interior light was left on. the battery has been replaced but the car wont do anything or make any type of turning over noise. could this have something to do with the anti-theft system in the car? or possibly the ignition switch? the car was running fine yesterday im not sure if i need to get a code from the audi dealership or have to have the starter replaced. id rather talk to someone with experience with this issue and this car, i just purchased the car about 2 weeks ago and i am not familiar with them. thank you for taking the time to read this bob

spammer replied: "Make sure you have a good charged battery and is connected right. If it worked before and the battery is dead, should be no reason to not start. I am not aware of any reset code due to a dead battery. Make sure is not in gear and clutch pressed if has any."

uthockey32 replied: "Sounds like the immobilizer is out. If it cant see the key (electronic) it will not allow the car to start. Have you tried using the other key that came with the car? Not real common but in some cases you can short out a control unit."

mick replied: "Do you get a yellow light flashing on your dash display? If so you probably have a poor connection on your key reader circuit this is a device that reads the key code.It is a common fault on Audi of your year.It is usually the connection directly under the steering wheel you have to remove cover that covers light and indicator switches to get at it .You should not require a code from Audi dealer. All this is assuming you have checked that your batt is fully charged and starter connections are ok."

Hambone replied: "Perhaps a silly question,. but you didn't say if anything ELSE works in the car now. You say it won't do anything.... are you certain the new battery is charged and installed correctly? Is there power on in the car? Lights? Windows? Anything?? Sounds silly, but have seen obvious problems mystify some people. -Hambone"
